Why Can’t Ordinary Blowers Replace Special Blowers for Pneumatic Conveying?
Many powder conveying projects try to cut initial costs by using ordinary ventilation blowers or low-pressure centrifugal blowers instead of dedicated pneumatic conveying blowers. On paper, their air flow may look similar, but once put into operation, frequent pipe blockages, material backflow, pressure drop and motor burnout follow. Downtime for cleaning pipes and maintenance eventually leads to much higher overall costs.
Pneumatic conveying works under variable resistance conditions. Elbows, dust collectors, silos and fluctuating material concentration all change system backpressure. Ordinary blowers are not designed for such working conditions.
Most ordinary blowers are centrifugal ventilation type, which produce air by kinetic energy. Their air pressure drops sharply when flow changes. Once pipes accumulate dust, materials turn damp or conveying distance extends, backpressure rises and air volume falls quickly. When airflow speed drops below the critical suspension velocity, powder settles and causes blockage.
Special Roots blowers for pneumatic conveying are positive displacement machines. Their core advantage is that air volume remains nearly stable regardless of backpressure changes within the rated range. They can maintain steady conveying velocity and keep powder suspended, which ordinary ventilation blowers cannot achieve.
There are four key limitations of ordinary blowers:
- Insufficient pressure bearing capacity Ordinary ventilation blowers are designed for workshop air exchange and exhaust with very low working pressure. MT Machinery special three-lobe Roots blowers for pneumatic conveying offer single-stage pressure from 9.8 kPa to 98 kPa (approx. 1.42 ~14.2 psi), and two-stage series version up to 196 kPa (approx. 28.4 psi). They handle long-distance, multi-elbow and dense-phase conveying with high backpressure. Ordinary blowers have little pressure margin; surging, shell air leakage and seal damage easily happen when backpressure increases.
- Sealing and dust-proof structure mismatch Pneumatic conveying media includes fly ash, lime powder, grain flour, plastic powder and other dusty materials. Ordinary blowers have simple seals; dust easily invades bearings and gearboxes and causes rapid wear. Our dedicated conveying blowers adopt combined labyrinth seals and oil seals. Dust-proof and oil-free sealing options are available to block dust and protect the main unit during long-term operation.
- Poor reliability for continuous operation Most powder conveying production lines run 24/7. MT Roots blowers are manufactured in accordance with JB/T 8941.1-2014, the Chinese industrial standard for Roots blowers. Vibration, temperature rise, noise and durability indicators are tested for continuous industrial operation. Ordinary ventilation blowers are designed for intermittent ventilation; they overheat and suffer fast bearing aging under long-duration full-pressure load.
- Lack of safety accessories Pneumatic conveying systems require safety valves, check valves, vent valves and intake filters to prevent material backflow and impeller damage after shutdown. Ordinary blowers seldom reserve interfaces for these components.
Application Scenarios & Selection Guidance
✅ Recommended to use MT special Roots blowers for pneumatic conveying: Conveying of grain, flour, corn and rice; fly ash, mineral powder, lime powder and cement powder; plastic pellets, PVC powder, carbon black and additives in dilute / medium dense phase positive pressure conveying; negative pressure suction feeding, centralized batching and dust suction systems; long pipelines, multi-point feeding lines with fluctuating resistance.
❌ Not recommended to replace with ordinary ventilation blowers for above scenarios. They may work temporarily under light load, but bring extremely high failure rates for long-term industrial production.
Key Concerns of Customers
Buyers focus heavily on pipe blockage risk, maintenance frequency, power consumption, dust damage to blower body, stable 24-hour running and spare parts availability. Many customers only compare air flow and ignore backpressure and performance curve. Saving money at the equipment purchase stage often leads to heavy losses from production shutdown, pipe cleaning and blower overhaul.
Advantages of MT Machinery
MT Machinery focuses on complete Roots blower solutions. All pneumatic-conveying models are tested for pressure, temperature rise and vibration before delivery. Our wide pressure coverage (single-stage 9.8~98 kPa, two-stage up to 196 kPa) supports both positive pressure feeding and negative pressure suction. Custom options include dust-proof sealing, stainless steel rotors, VFD drive, silencers, filters and full valve sets.
Our engineers calculate system resistance based on conveying distance, pipe diameter, material density and throughput, instead of selecting blowers only by air flow, helping customers avoid insufficient pressure margin. Standardized wearing parts ensure stable supply. Our technical team provides remote commissioning and troubleshooting for blockage and pressure faults, delivering a complete air supply solution rather than standalone blowers.
Pneumatic conveying is a systematic project. The blower is the heart of the air source. Replacing dedicated conveying blowers with ordinary ones is a risky way to cut cost.
