Variable Frequency Blower vs Fixed Speed Blower: Which Saves More Power Under Your Working Condition?
Many customers for wastewater aeration, aquaculture, biogas transportation and pneumatic conveying often wonder whether to equip the Roots blower with fixed speed or variable frequency drive (VFD). There is a widespread misunderstanding that variable frequency blowers always save electricity.
In fact, the Roots blower belongs to positive displacement equipment with constant torque. Energy saving does not come from the VFD itself. It depends on whether the air flow of the process fluctuates and whether you often release extra air through bypass relief valves. Wrong selection will lead to higher power consumption and unnecessary investment.
The three-lobed Roots blowers from Mingtian Machinery are manufactured in accordance with JB/T 8941.1-2014 General Purpose Roots Blowers — Part 1: Technical Specifications. This Chinese standard is equivalent to relevant ISO specifications for positive displacement blowers. We can provide both metric and imperial data for overseas projects: pressure conversion between kPa and PSI (10 kPa ≈ 1.45 PSI), air flow conversion between m³/min and CFM (1 m³/min ≈ 35.31 CFM). Our single-stage blower covers 9.8~98 kPa, and two-stage series blower can reach up to 196 kPa. Both fixed-speed and VFD integrated packages are available.
1. Fixed Speed Roots Blower: Stable Constant Air Flow for Steady Load
The motor of fixed speed blower runs at 50Hz rated speed with stable air output. Flow adjustment mainly relies on bypass vent valves to release surplus air. ✅ Suitable & energy-saving scenarios:
- Stable 24-hour operation with unchanged process requirements, such as plating tank aeration, constant-flow pneumatic conveying, small-scale biogas pressure stabilization with steady gas production, no frequent venting.
- Long-term full-load operation, rare flow adjustment, few start-stop cycles every day.
- Small short-term projects with limited budget, simple structure and low maintenance requirement.
⚠️ Disadvantages: When process air demand drops, excess gas has to be vented, causing electric energy waste. Direct-on-line starting brings large inrush current (4~7 times rated current), which may trip the circuit or damage the motor for large models.
Customer concerns: Lower purchase cost, universal spare parts and easy maintenance. The downside is poor adjustability and high electricity bill under fluctuating working conditions.
2. Variable Frequency Roots Blower: Adjust Speed to Match Air Demand, Save Power Only for Variable Load
The VFD system adjusts motor speed steplessly. The flow rate of Roots blower is proportional to rotation speed, so you can match the real-time process requirement without continuous venting.
Key point: VFD transformation achieves obvious power saving (15%~35% on site) only if you used to regulate flow by vent valves. If the blower keeps running at full load with fully open valves, the VFD itself brings 2%~5% extra loss. It will NOT save energy, even consume slightly more than fixed-speed type.
✅ Suitable & energy-saving scenarios:
- Wastewater biochemical aeration: DO level changes with influent COD, ammonia nitrogen, day-night difference and seasonal temperature.
- Aquaculture aeration: Higher oxygen demand at night or high-temperature seasons, lower demand in daytime; load varies with water temperature.
- Biogas pressurization & recovery: Biogas output fluctuates with fermentation status, leading to unstable pressure and flow.
- Intermittent pneumatic conveying, batch production for chemical and feed industries with variable load.
- Soft start required for weak power grid, to avoid current impact and reduce motor burnout risk.
⚠️ Disadvantages: Higher total package cost. The VFD is sensitive to working environment; extra protection is needed under humid, corrosive or dusty conditions, and regular inspection for electric control system is required.
3. Quick Selection Guide Table
| Working Condition | Recommended Type | Energy Saving Description |
| Stable air flow, full load, seldom venting | Fixed Speed Blower | Simple structure, no VFD loss, better overall energy performance |
| Great flow fluctuation, frequent adjustment, long-time bypass venting | VFD Blower | Eliminate energy waste from venting, remarkable long-term electricity saving |
| Weak power grid, frequent start-stop, risk of tripping | VFD Blower | Soft start, protect motor and power grid while saving energy |
| Small short-term project, tight budget & stable load | Fixed Speed Blower | Low initial investment, easy maintenance |
4. Advantages of Mingtian Machinery
- Same blower housing can be configured for either fixed speed or VFD package. Pressure range from 9.8–98 kPa (single stage) up to 196 kPa (two-stage series). Widely matched for wastewater, aquaculture, biogas, electroplating and pneumatic conveying. Our VFD blowers are equipped with special inverter-duty motors, instead of ordinary fixed-speed motors retrofitted with VFD, to avoid overheating and insulation aging at low speed (a common pitfall rarely mentioned online).
- Every unit is tested for performance, noise, temperature rise and vibration complying with JB/T 8941.1-2014. Metric and imperial parameter sheets are available for overseas engineering partners.
- Free working condition calculation: We calculate energy consumption difference and payback period between fixed speed and VFD solution according to your air flow, pressure, running hours and load curve. We will never recommend VFD blindly to raise your cost.
- Optional PID local control or DO linked control cabinet for automatic speed regulation in wastewater aeration. Explosion-proof and anti-corrosion VFD integrated packages are available for special media.
- Reliable after-sales service: Whole machine warranty, separate warranty for electric control parts. On-site service in domestic market, remote commissioning guidance and stable spare parts supply for overseas clients.
5. Common Pitfalls to Avoid
- Do not believe VFD always saves power. Roots blower is constant torque equipment, different from centrifugal blower with cube energy-saving curve. No energy benefit for stable full-load operation.
- Do not run ordinary fixed-speed motor at low frequency for long time, which is easy to overheat and burn out. Mingtian VFD blowers adopt dedicated inverter motors.
- VFD cannot replace silencer or sound insulation room for noise reduction; it only cuts noise under partial variable load.
