Desulfurization Oxidation Blower Selection Misconception: More Airflow Is Not Always Better
Many procurement and engineering designers for flue gas desulfurization projects fall into the same trap when selecting wet desulfurization oxidation Roots blowers. They believe that more oxidation air means sufficient oxidation of calcium sulfite and better gypsum quality. Therefore, they intentionally oversize the airflow during selection, thinking a larger airflow guarantees stable compliance.
However, abundant on-site operation cases prove that for desulfurization oxidation blowers, higher airflow does not equal better performance. Blindly increasing airflow will trigger a series of problems: soaring energy consumption, abnormal slurry disturbance, poor gypsum crystal formation, and long-term overload damage to the blower.
Why Excessive Airflow Causes Trouble in Desulfurization Systems
In the wet limestone-gypsum desulfurization process, the core function of the oxidation blower is to supply oxygen to convert calcium sulfite into calcium sulfate for qualified gypsum by-products. The oxidation reaction only needs oxidation air matching the SO₂ load with a reasonable margin, not unlimited air supply.
- High energy consumption and out-of-control operating costs Roots blowers are positive displacement machines; airflow is proportional to rotating speed. Oversized blowers deliver redundant air, raising motor no-load loss and pipeline resistance loss, which leads to huge extra electricity costs year after year.
- Excessive slurry agitation, broken gypsum crystals and poor dewatering Surplus oxidation air stirs the slurry violently inside the absorption tower, disrupting stable crystal growth. Fine and sticky gypsum crystals result in high moisture content after vacuum belt dewatering. Gypsum becomes hard to sell, and solid waste disposal costs rise.
- Liquid level fluctuation, foam overflow and unstable system operation Extra air generates massive foam in the slurry, causing overflow and slurry leakage, increasing chemical consumption and fluctuating tower pressure, which destabilizes desulfurization efficiency.
- Accelerated wear of blowers, pipelines, check valves and silencers Oversized blowers run far away from the design working condition, with higher temperature rise and vibration. Seals, gears and bearings wear faster, bringing frequent tripping, oil leakage and higher maintenance costs.
Key reminder: Airflow supports oxidation reaction, while pressure overcomes slurry depth and pipeline resistance. Pressure matching comes first. Even with huge airflow, insufficient pressure cannot deliver air deep into slurry and causes uneven oxidation. Extra airflow only wastes power.
The Roots blowers from Mingtian Machinery feature single-stage boost from 9.8 kPa to 98 kPa, and two-stage series boost up to 196 kPa, covering various desulfurization conditions with different tower depths and pipeline resistance. Our products comply with JB/T 8941.1-2014, the Chinese industrial standard for general-purpose Roots blowers, with performance equivalent to mainstream international standards. We support unit conversion between kPa, bar, PSI for pressure, and m³/min, CFM for flow rate, convenient for domestic and overseas project calculation.
Correct Selection Method: Airflow & Pressure Calculation and Proper Margin
✅ Airflow calculation: Compute theoretical oxygen demand based on flue gas volume, SO₂ concentration and calcium-sulfur ratio. Keep the oxidation air margin around 10%, and do not exceed 15%. Avoid stacking excessive safety factors.
✅ Pressure calculation: Total pressure = hydrostatic pressure of slurry + resistance from oxidation air pipes, nozzles, elbows and silencers. Reserve an extra 10%–20% margin according to slurry density and tower depth.
✅ Recommended configuration solutions:
- Small & medium boiler and kiln desulfurization (shallow tower, low resistance): Single-stage three-lobe Roots oxidation blower within 30–60 kPa. VFD configuration can adjust airflow automatically following flue gas load for obvious energy saving under low load.
- Large power plant, deep-tower desulfurization, complex pipelines and long-distance air distribution: High-pressure single-stage or two-stage series Roots blowers. Optional anti-corrosion coating or stainless steel casing to resist acidic and humid medium.
- Standard suggestion: One working unit plus one standby unit, equipped with silencer, check valve, safety valve, pressure transmitter and temperature monitor to prevent overpressure.
Typical Application Scenarios
Wet FGD for power plant flue gas, sintering machine desulfurization, glass kiln desulfurization, waste incineration flue gas desulfurization, lime-gypsum desulfurization in steel plants and chemical tail gas desulfurization.
Common pitfall for renovation projects: Many users replace blowers without recalculating pipeline resistance. Scaling and blockage of old pipes and nozzles increase resistance. Even if airflow parameter is correct, the actual oxidation air entering the tower is insufficient, leading to accumulated calcium sulfite and unstable desulfurization efficiency. On-site pipeline resistance survey is required before selection.

- Free working condition calculation by our engineers. We provide optimized models according to flue gas data, tower depth and pipeline drawings instead of simply recommending larger blowers.
- Sufficient spare parts inventory. Remote guidance and on-site maintenance support are available for global clients. English datasheets and inspection documents can be provided for foreign trade orders.
Self-Check List: Is Your Oxidation Blower Oversized?
- You need to throttle the outlet valve to stabilize operation under normal desulfurization load
- Gypsum stays wet, dewatering is poor, slurry foams heavily and overflows frequently
- Motor current is high, temperature rises sharply, bearings and seals get damaged often
- Electricity cost remains high when flue gas load drops and airflow cannot be reduced
If any symptom appears, recheck your working condition. You can switch to a properly sized blower or carry out VFD transformation instead of running an oversized blower.
